Dakota Schuck

Founder of Schuck Data, and someone who has spent a career dedicated to the improved understanding of information.

"When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind."

— Lord Kelvin (1824–1907)

Dakota Schuck first became fascinated with statistics and epistemology while studying Economics at Bard College, and went on to deepen that mastery while earning a Master's at the University of California, Irvine.

The real education came at scale. Dakota got a crash course in massive data while rewriting legacy code at the U.S. Census Bureau, then helped develop new quality-assessment research and implement accuracy improvements to the Master Address File and the TIGER line shapefiles for the entire country — work that ranged from principal-component analysis on national address data to building the risk measures used to decide which city blocks get canvassed in person.

From the large-scale, Dakota shifted to the immediate and urgent: in 2021, building improved applicant-processing systems so that pharmacies across Texas could receive the newly developed COVID vaccine rapidly and reliably, under real deadline pressure and with messy incoming data.

In recognition of a keen analytic mind and an unusual ability to adapt to low-information environments and build new tools, Dakota was invited to join a prestigious DC-area consulting firm, helping federal clients manage, transfer, and report on critically important databases. It was here that Dakota developed a reputation for data dashboarding and report automation — including custom visualizations built for agency leadership — and found a real artistic satisfaction in elegant, accessible data visualization.

The tools and talents developed over a career of improving high-stakes, high-volume data systems are now made available to you, with the formation of Schuck Data: a boutique data consultancy ready to meet your organization where it is, as you take meaningful steps toward getting the most out of your data.
